Goal of the event:
It was organised in order to have the basic knowledge of Turkish sign language, and also to understand their everyday challenges better. We also learned how can we communicate with hearing impaired people.
Short description of the event:
There is a cafe called Dem Good Coffee which is founded by Hearing Impaired People Association. This place is located in Besiktas, Istanbul and also the baristas are mostly hearing impaired people. So customers have to use sign language when they want to order something. They have smart menu which also shows the orders sign language.
We had a workshop with a tutor who showed us basic information and the alphabet of the Turkish Sign Language. Thus we were able to introduce ourselves. Also we learned simple phrases that we can use in daily life when we come across with a hearing impaired person.
How did your event go?:
It was beyond our expectations. Most of us realized they were not aware before what hearing impaired people were experiencing. It was really nice.
