Goal of the event:
Children and adults with Down’s syndrome must be able to enjoy full and equal rights alongside their peers. This includes the opportunity to participate fully in their communities as and when they wish with the right support.
Some people may need extra support to do things that are not specifically for people with a learning disability and we need to encourage our wider communities to be appropriately inclusive. For this purpose we as ESN YTU went to DownCafe where the Downsyndromed people are employeed to paint tshirts and help them to earn money from what we eat and drink together.
Short description of the event:
Our esner volunteers prepared the paints, brushes and tshirts before we go to DownCafe. So many of erasmus students joined us, so we were a big crowded group. When they saw that we were that much crowded it was obvious to see their happiness. Firstly, we just talked and know each other. We become friends and talked about many things with the downsyndromed kids. After that we ate our börek and drink tea all together. Then we started to paint tshirts together with kids by deciding together what to write or draw. While painting we had fun moments by using hand and face paints and made jokes with each other. Moreover we had music and we danced together. It was more than that you can see from pictures. We had so much fun. At the end of our paintings, there were such a nice paintings and we were amazed. We took photos with our tshirts and what we did all together. Leaving time was sad but they knew that we would go there to visit them again!
How did your event go?:
It was amazing, we spend good quality time. We had opportunity to understand their difficulties in life but there are always a way to make their social life more enjoyable and much easier. Down Syndromed is not a cause to stay in corner in life. We have to improve the ways of living better for them and help them socialize with us.
